EL Wire Buying Guide Author: Nick Curtiss This guide is intended for beginners to learn the basic components need for EL Wire so that they may make a wiser purchasing decision. EL Wire Kits consist of two main components. The EL Wire and Power Inverter. First the EL Wire itself. EL wire is a metal wire usually made of copper with a phosphor coating. An electrical current is applied to the wire to make it light up. The metal wire and phosphor coating are protected by an outside clear PVC coating. The PVC coating protects the wire and phosphor from oxidation and extends the life of the light. The PVC coating may be colored to further enhance or alter the color of the light. Now for the Power Inverter. EL wire requires a Power Inverter. We carry two kinds of inverters. The first is DC 12 Volt to AC Inverter with 4pin Molex. This Inverter is used in computers to convert 12 Volt DC to AC current compatible with EL wire. Our second type of inverter is the Battery Pack Inverter. The Batter Pack Inverter takes batteries as the power source to produce current for the EL wire. Battery Packs are useful since they can be used in a mobile situation. They can be clipped onto clothing, bikes, etc. We also offer a Cigarette Light Adapter which allows our computer kits to be used in an automotive application. Lastly, if you would like to use your EL Wire outside of a computer and power it using the 12 Volt DC inverters we carry AC to DC Adapters with 4pin Molex Connectors. These adapters work with a standard house power outlet. AC to DC Adapters are recommended if you want to use your EL Wire Kit in home or office applications. Example Configurations
