Using Q. Scan Utilities

When the Q Scan application is opened it scans the Macintosh for connected Q drives. When the scan is complete, the main window will display a list of all the Q drives. To format or otherwise work with a Q drive, you must first select the Q drive by clicking its device icon in the main window. The row containing the Q drive will highlight indicating your selection. When a Q drive is selected, the three buttons at the top of the main window will become active and available for use. If multiple Q drives are found, you may select a different drive by clicking on a new device icon or, alternatively, press the up/down arrow keys.

At the top of the window are three buttons. Some of these buttons are not active (they appear dim) in certain instances, such as when a Q drive is not selected. A button will only become active when the action represented by the button is capable of being performed. Listed below is a description of the action performed by each button.

Scan Button: The Scan button will cause the Q Scan application to completely rebuild the list of Q drives in the main window. You may wish to re-scan if you just inserted or removed a Q drive since the previous scan.

Mount/Unmount Button: The Mount button will attempt to mount the volume belonging to the selected Q drive (displaying it on the desktop and making it available for general use). If the volume belonging to the drive is already mounted the Mount button changes into the Unmount button. The Unmount button attempts to unmount the volume belonging to the selected Q drive (removing the drive from the desktop and removing it from general use).

Format Button: The Format button will completely erase and initialize a Q drive for use on a Macintosh or PC computer. After clicking the Format button, you will be immediately warned that this operation will erase all files on the selected device and will give you an opportunity to cancel or to proceed by selecting a volume format. Click the ³Cancel² button to exit and leave your device untouched. If you choose to format the new volume using MacOS Standard, MacOS Extended, or MS-DOS volume formats the format will begin. Since USB hard disks are not compatible with older Macintosh systems, MacOS Extended will be the most appropriate choice for use exclusively with Macintosh computers. If you intend to use the Q drive to move data between Macintosh systems and PC systems the MS-DOS volume format is the most appropriate choice.

Please read the following cautions:

WARNING: Do not leave the Q. device plugged into the USB port while starting or restarting your Macintosh. The system may attempt to boot from the Q., and may possibly result in a system "hang." This can easily be cleared up by removing the Q. from the USB drive and restarting the system once again.
